Obituary
Laura Iral Schulz, 85, died on Tuesday, October 13, 1998, at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics after a brief illness. Born in Colusa, Illinois, on January 11, 1913, and graduated from Dallas City High School, Iral was a resident of Burlington for over 60 years. Her parents were Ira P. Bowlin and Elizabeth V. Rice Bowlin. On February 7, 1934, she married Henry C. Schulz, Jr. in Warsaw, Illinois. An accomplished pianist, Iral played for dances and other events throughout the area during her younger years. In 1948, she and her husband, Henry C. Schulz, Jr., opened Heinie's Grocery at 900 Oak Street in Burlington, which they operated until 1975. The store became a landmark, noted for its quality meats and as a popular gathering spot for students at Oak Street Middle School. In 1956, Iral and her husband and brother, Kenneth K. Bowlin, also opened the Twin Oaks Drive-In Restaurant on Mt. Pleasant Street in Burlington, featuring carhop service. In retirement she and her husband maintained their home in Burlington, enjoying bridge with friends, leaning to play the organ, and traveling throughout the country. After her husband died, Iral continued to travel, regularly taking "mystery" bus trips to surprise destinations. For many years Iral was an active member of the Oak Street Baptist Church and its Miriam Circle; Kings Daughters, Abidah Circle; Prime Time at the West Burlington Christian Church; and the Golden Oldies Senior Group. Survivors include her son, Keith D. Schulz; daughter-in-law, Emily B. Roane; two grandchildren, Keith D. Schulz, Jr. and Christine L. Schulz; and two step-grandchildren, Sarah L. Dandelles and Stefan R. Dandelles. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and three brothers: Kenneth K. Bowlin, Keith M. Bowlin, and Dorn Bowlin. Funeral services for Mrs. Laura Iral Schulz will be held on Saturday, October 17, 1998, at 10:30 a.m. at the Oak Street Baptist Church. Rev. Ronald Presley will officiate. Interment will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery. The family will receive friends in Prugh's Chapel Friday evening from 6:30 until 8:00 p.m. Memorials have been established for the Oak Street Baptist Church Music Program and the American Heart Association.
