Charles Edward Schulz, 79, born October 30, 1930, to Grace Antonetta Hingst and Herbert Emil Albert Schulz in Burlington, Iowa, passed away on Sunday, April 4, 2010, at 1:46 p.m. at Great River Medical Center. He attended Burlington Schools and graduated from Burlington High School where he participated in football, baseball, golden gloves boxing, a class play, and was a class officer. He was a member of the first B.H.S. baseball team to win a state championship in 1946. After graduation, he joined the United States Marine Corps, where he spent five years, including 11 months in Korea with 1st Division G3 Intelligence. At one time he was the youngest Staff Sergeant in the Marine Corps. His first three years were spent at the Marine Corps Depot in Barstow, CA in the drafting department. He also served at Camp Pendleton, CA and Camp LaJune, N.C. In July 1951, he married high school sweetheart Peggy Louise York at Bethany Lutheran Church in Burlington. After resigning from the military in 1953, he enrolled at Bowling Green State University, where he graduated in three years with a teaching degree. His first son, Burke, was born while he was still a student in 1954. Upon graduating, he taught one year at Weston, Ohio High School, after which he was asked to come back to Burlington High School, where he taught for nine years. In 1960, his second son, Christopher, was born in Burlington. For five years, he attended ISU during the summer, receiving his master's degree and was called to Mason City, Iowa as administrator of the Adult and Continuing Education Department at North Iowa Area Community College. In Mason City Charlie and his family lived across the street from Charlie Brown. In 1969, he was again called back to Burlington as Dean of the Adult and Continuing Education for Area 16 at Southeastern Community College at the Burlington and Keokuk campuses. In addition, he directed the education and trade program at Iowa State Penitentiary, and oversaw the nursing program at Southeastern Community College. He served the college for 24 years, retiring with Emeritus status. He is a member of the educators fraternity, and served as president of the Area 16 Community Colleges Adult Education representatives for the State of Iowa. His hobby was watercolor painting, pen and ink drawing, and pencil sketching. He is survived by his wife, Peggy; two sons, Burke (Molly) Schulz of Laurens, SC, and Christopher (Anita) Schulz of Corpus Christi, TX; four grandchildren, Mathew, Emily, Kehr, and Hannah Schulz; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. He will fondly be remembered as a loyal fan of B.H.S. athletics, especially girl's softball, and a lifelong Chicago Bears and Cubs fan. He was a lifetime member of Bethany Lutheran Church, where he served on the church council. He was preceded in death by his dear brother, James Frederick Schulz, both parents, and his second mother, Daisy Lillian Saladay Schulz. Visitation will be from 8:00 a.m. until 8:00 p.m., with the family to receive friends from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Wednesday, April 7, 2010, at the Hass-Thielen Funeral Home. The Funeral Service for Mr. Schulz will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday, April 8, 2010, at the Bethany Lutheran Church, with Reverend Carl J. Engstrom officiating. A Memorial Dedication will be by the Hamilton-Walters Marine Corps League #616 at the church. Interment will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery, with full military honors rendered by the U.S. Marine Corps. A memorial has been established for scholarships in his name for Bethany Lutheran Church and Burlington High School. The Hass-Thielen Funeral Home is in care of the arrange- ments.
