Gladys Schulz, 95, of Burlington, died at 9:25 a.m. Thursday, January 24, 2008, at Prairie Ridge Care & Rehab in Mediapolis. Born March 17, 1912, in Orange County, Calif., she was the daughter of Parn and Allie Martin Hillyard. On October 12, 1938, she married Carl Joseph Schulz in Danville. Mrs. Schulz was secretary for the Burlington Hospital Superintendent. She was secretary at Miller Insurance Agency. She was a homemaker. She attended rural schools and graduated from Burlington High School in 1930. She was a member of First United Methodist Church, Farm Bureau and Homebuilders Sunday School Class. She was active in United Methodist Women. She was secretary for South Jackson School Board and a leader of Farmaids 4-H Club. She was councilwoman for YWCA and Des Moines County Extension Service. Survivors include her husband; two sons, John Schulz of Burlington, and Paul Schulz of Charlotte, N. C.; three daughters, Jane Ferguson of West Des Moines, Diane Pfadenhauer of Roland, and Shirley Rath of Kalona; one brother, Hartzell Hillyard of rural Burlington; three sisters, Rachel Kelley of Wapello, Wanda Campbell of rural Burlington, and Norma Massner of Mediapolis; 12 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, five sisters and three brothers. Visitation with family will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday at Prugh's Chapel. The funeral for Mrs. Schulz will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Grace United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Mel Miller officiating. Burial will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery. Memorials have been established for First United Methodist Church Rebuilding Fund and Mediapolis Fire and Rescue.
