Obituary
A 69-year-old Burlington man, reportedly despondent about his failing health, was found hanged in the garage he rented at 1301 Perkins about 7:15 pm Tuesday.
Carl Adolph Bergman, 1712 Dodge, was discovered by his wife, Edna, who told police she had been unable to reach her husband by telephone from her job throughout the afternoon Tuesday.
Police said dust on Mr. Bergman’s car had been disturbed. They concluded that he had climbed onto the auto, tied a rope to the garage rafter, put the other end around his neck, and jumped off.
Deputy Medical Examiner Dr. Curtis Nessa said death was by strangulation and told officers an autopsy would not be necessary.
Friends and relatives told investigating officers that Mr. Bergman had been depressed in recent weeks because “he wasn’t strong enough to do the things he used to” and had mentioned several times that he “would be better off dead.”
Mr. Bergman was born July 19, 1900, in Burlington the son of Charles and Helga Bergman, and married Edna A Landwehr in Burlington, Aug. 16, 1922.
A former Iowa Army Ammunition plant employee, Mr. Bergman had also worked as a truck driver for the Standard Oil company before his 1955 retirement. He belonged to the United Church of Christ.
