James "Jim" Albert Schreiner, 73, of Burlington, died at 5:35 p.m. Saturday, June 6, 2009, at his home. Born July 9, 1935, in Burlington, he was the son of Albert Jon and Dorothy Margaret Peterson Schreiner. In January, 1955, he married Betty Louise Blodgett. They divorced. On April 5, 1991, he married Patricia J. Standard in Burlington. Mr. Schreiner was a police officer for the City of Burlington from 1961 to 1991. During his career, he was a polygraph operator and attended the FBI Academy. He retired as a Captain in 1991. He worked in plant operations at Great River Medical Center in West Burlington, retiring in November 2008. He owned and operated The 901 Shoppe. He graduated from Burlington High School and served in the Army from 1958 to 1961. He was a bicyclist and rode RAGBRAI three times. He was a member of Bethany Lutheran Church, Eagles Aerie 150, Moose Lodge 579, and Ducks Unlimited. He was a member of Iowa Association of Chiefs of Police and Police Officers and the Iowa State Police Association. He enjoyed auctions, playing golf and watching the Chicago Cubs. Survivors include his wife; three sons, James Schreiner of Farmington, IL, and Jeff Schreiner and Ryan Standard, both of Burlington; nine grandchildren; one sister, Rosemary Richard of Elmhurst, IL; nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother and one sister. No visitation is planned. The body has been cremated. The celebration of life for Mr. Schreiner will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Big Muddy's in Burlington. A memorial has been established for Bethany Lutheran Church. Hass-Thielen Funeral Home in Burlington is in charge of arrangements.
