Edward Earl Schiefer, 86, of West Burlington, died at 7:15 PM Wednesday, October 5, 2016, at the Blair House Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in Burlington.
Born January 24, 1930, in Burlington, he was the son of Walter and Julia (Bieg) Schiefer. On March 14, 1953, he married Beverly Hanson in Omaha, NE. After her passing in April of 1985, Edward married Mel Davis on May 12, 1991, in West Burlington.
Edward enlisted in the United States Air Force after graduating from Burlington High School in 1948. He was career Air Force; a Minute Man Missile Instructor & Administrator, and a B-52 Technical expert serving during the Korean War from June 21, 1948 until August 31, 1969. While on active duty he received his Bachelor and Masters Degrees in Education, while attending night school, from the University of Illinois. After 21 years of distinguished service to our great country, he retired as a Senior Master Sergeant and moved back to Burlington where he served as the Director of Vocational and Technical Education at the Southeastern Community College (SCC) North Campus. He later held positions as the Director, and the Dean of Instruction and Career Education for the North Campus. He retired from the Community College in 1995 but was called out of retirement in 1996 to serve as the Interim Superintendant for SCC.
Edward was a lifetime member of Bethany Lutheran Church. He was a member of the West Burlington Early Risers Kiwanis, the Eagles Club, was on the Salvation Army Board of Directors, and he was chosen to serve on several local and state commissions. He enjoyed traveling, golf, going to auctions, dancing, and he owned his own airplane. He and his wife Mel, were members of a local dance club. He was a Master Craftsman who enjoyed working with wood, building things, and refinishing furniture. In 1980 he built his own home in the country where he enjoyed spending time with his family and friends.
Survivors include his wife, Mel Schiefer of Burlington; one son, Wayne (Lana) Schiefer of O'Fallon, IL; one daughter, Teresa (Bob) Prall of Burlington; two step-daughters, Melanie Davis of West Burlington and Tere Jo Davis of Kirksville, MO; eight grandchildren, Jamie Prall, Erica Stoker, Blake Prall, Andrea Gibbons, Amber King, Kayla Waterman, Alex Buckingham, and Jared Schiefer; four great-grandchildren and two additional great-grandchildren on the way.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Beverly; twin sons; one step-son; one brother, Walter; and one sister, Bernice Wells.
Visitation will be from noon until 3:00 PM with the family to receive friends, Sunday, October 9, 2016 at Prugh~Thielen Funeral Home. The funeral service will be immediately following at 3:00 PM. Full military honors will be rendered by the Burlington Area Veterans Honor Guard.
A time of coffee and fellowship will immediately follow in the Prugh~Thielen Community Room.
Cremation will be entrusted to the care of Prugh~Thielen Crematory following the service.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established for Salvation Army.
