Edward Earl Scheu, 102, of Burlington IA, died on February 9, 2017, at The Colonnade in O'Fallon IL. Born September 15, 1914, in Burlington, Ed was the son of Charles J. and Antoinette Boers Scheu. On January 25, 1939, he married Louise Erickson in Burlington.
Ed attended Burlington Schools and graduated from Burlington Jr. College (now SE Iowa Community College.) He worked as a Railway Mail Clerk traveling between Burlington and Minneapolis MN. After his retirement from the mail service he worked as a realtor at the Gerdes & Sparrow office.
As a young man Ed enjoyed participating, and was a fierce competitor, in many sports, especially basketball and baseball. Later in life tennis, golf, table tennis, and badminton nourished his competitive spirit. Ed also enjoyed playing cards, gardening, and handyman projects.
Ed was an active member of First United Church of Christ serving on its Consistory for many years. He was a member of, and a regular at, the Elks and Moose lodges and the Burlington YMCA. He was a volunteer at Great River Medical Center's Klein Center well into his 90s.
Ed's family and many friends enjoyed his humor and positive approach to life. Survivors include two daughters, Judith Scheu of Honolulu HI and Lucia Graham of O'Fallon IL, two grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife, parents, three sisters and two brothers.
The funeral service for Mr. Scheu will be on Thursday, February 16 at First United Church of Christ. Pastor JudyAnn Morse officiating. Interment will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery. The family will receive friends for one hour prior to the services.
