Obituary
Robert "Bob" Lee Schappaugh, 75, of Burlington died at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, July 4, 2007, at Danville Care Center. Born Feb. 22, 1932, in Harlan, he was the son of Francis D. and Pearl I. Thompson Schappaugh. On Nov. 27, 1955, he married Joyce Mumme in Burlington. Mr. Schappaugh was a supervisor for the postal service for 33 years. After his retirement, he worked as a security guard at J.I. Case Co. He was a Navy Veteran of the Korean War. He was a graduate of Perry High School. He was a member of Bethany Lutheran Church, a Past Master Mason of Des Moines Masonic Lodge No. 1, past District Governor of the Lions Club where he received the Melvin Jone's Fellowship Award, and former member of American Legion. He was a Cub Scout leader for many years and a Boy Scout Leader where he earned Order of the Arrow Vigil and Silver Beaver awards. He was a cornea transplant recipient and has donated his eyes to research. Survivors include his wife; two sons, Kirk Schappaugh of Des Moines and Todd Schappaugh of Burlington; one daughter, Kimberly VandeVoort of Burlington; six grandchildren; three stepgrandchildren; one great-granddaughter; one brother, Byron Schappaugh of Bettendorf; and one sister, Barbara Sass of Perry. He was preceded in death by his parents, one great-granddaughter, one great-grandson and one brother. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday at Lunning Chapel, with family receiving friends following Masonic Rites at 5 p.m. The funeral for Mr. Schappaugh will be at 1:30 p.m. Monday at Lunning Chapel, with the Rev. Erik Swanson officiating. Interment will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery. Memorials have been established for Iowa Lions Cornea Center and Danville Care Center's Activity Department.
