Paul William Schaefer, 83, of Burlington, died at 2:11 am Saturday, June 2, 2012, at the Great River Medical Center in West Burlington. Born May 26, 1929, in Burlington, he was the son of Paul Oak and Mary Suzanne Clover Schaefer. He married Maxine Helmick in Burlington. She died in 1989. He then married Alicia May Callaway in Gladstone, IL. Paul worked for the Burlington Northern Railroad for 45 years before retiring. He was a U.S. Navy Veteran, serving in World War II and then serving in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. Paul was a life-time member of the VFW. He enjoyed raising ponies and kittens. He especially enjoyed spending time with his family. Survivors include his wife, Alicia; five sons, Bob (Ginger) Fisher of Osceola, Jim Fisher of Eagle Grove, IA, Bill Schaefer of Lancaster, MO, Randy (Kelly) Schaefer of Burlington, and Scott (Trish) Schaefer of Morning Sun; one daughter, Michelle (Chris) McGraw of Stronghurst, IL; 16 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; one brother; Gary Oak Schaefer of Alabama; one sister; Patricia Johnson of Mount Pleasant; and several nieces and nephews. Besides his first wife, he was preceded in death by his parents and one daughter, Tammy. Visitation will be from noon until 7:00 PM with the family to receive friends from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM Monday, June 4, 2012 at Hass-Thielen Funeral Home. The funeral service for Mr. Schaefer will be 10:00 AM Tuesday, June 5, 2012, at Hass-Thielen Funeral Home with Chaplain Randy Gearhart officiating. Burial will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery. A time of food and fellowship will be held at the Moose Lodge following the burial. A memorial has been established for the Des Moines County Humane Society.
