Muriel Speirs Sanders, 91, of Burlington, died at 10:40 p.m. Monday, Aug. 23, 1999, at her home. Born Sept. 16, 1907, at Wray, Colo., she was the daughter of Harvey and Osa Glick Speirs. She married Leonard Poffinbarger June 29, 1927, in Council Bluffs. She married James M. Sanders Jan. 17, 1942, at Hannibal, Mo. He died Dec. 12, 1978. She attended Iowa Wesleyan College, the University of Iowa, and Columbia University, receiving a master's degree. She taught preschool, kindergarten, and first grades in the Burlington school system before retiring. She was a member of Kappa Chapter of Kappa Delta Pi, Chapter P of PEO, E.C. Blackmar Chapter of the Order of Eastern Star, Circle of King's Daughters, American University Women, and the First Congregational Church. Survivors include two sons, Leonard M. Poffinbarger of Citrus Heights, Calif., and D. Ned Poffinbarger of Sacreamento, Calif.; seven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and one niece. She was preceded in death by one sister. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday in Prugh's Chapel. The funeral for Mrs. Sanders will be 11:30 a.m. Friday at the First Congregational Church, with the Rev. Roy Backus officiating. Burial will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery. A memorial has been established.
