Obituary
Glenn Douglas Bennett, 31, vice president and secretary of Bennett Home Center, died Tuesday morning at Veterans hospital, Iowa City.
He was stricken ill during a trip to Europe last fall and returned to the US for treatment at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., last November. He has been in Veteran’s hospital, Iowa City, since early January. The Douglas Bennett home is at 513 Acres.
He was an interior decorator, trained in the Parsons School of Design in New York, and was associated with his father, Glenn, in Bennett Home Center.
He had attended Wentworth Military academy and University of Iowa and graduated from Drake University in 1953. He was an ROTC member at Drake and a member of the Beta Theta Pi fraternity.
He was a 1949 Burlington high school graduate and set local track and swim records while in high school.
He was an Air Force captain and served both on active and reserve duty. While stationed in Okinawa he was picked for an Air Force Far East swim team that made a world tour.
He was a member of the First Methodist church, the Kiwanis club board of directors, the Jaycees, the Chamber of Commerce, and Burlington golf club.
A native of Lincoln, Neb., he was born Oct. 28, 1931, the son of Glenn and Pauline Wright Bennett. The Bennetts moved to Burlington 25 years ago.
Mrs. Douglas Bennett is the former Marion Jacobson. They were married in Waterville, Ia., on July 1, 1958. They have a son, Eric, and a daughter, Karen.
Also surviving are his parents and a sister, Mrs. Leonard S. Walworth, Jr., of Denver, Colo.
The body is at Elliott-Lunning chapel. Services will be Friday at 1:30 pm in the Elliott-Lunning Chapel. Dr. G Dempster Yinger will officiate. Burial will be Aspen Grove.
