Obituary
Leland W. Bennett, 79, of Valrico, Florida, and formerly of Terre Haute, Illinois, died at 2:10 pm. Monday, November 10, 2008, at James A. Haley Veterans Administration Hospital in Tampa, Florida. Born May 31, 1929, in Carthage, Illinois, he was the son of Charles Lorenzo and Ada Susan Jones Bennett. On October 6, 1951, he married Lois Palmer in Burlington. She died April 9, 2003. Mr. Bennett worked for more than 20 years at Iowa Army Ammunition Plant in Middletown. He worked for Smith Implement, Bennett and Roth Trucking, Bennett Custom Homes and Connections of Tampa Bay, Inc. He served in the Army during the Korean War. Survivors include three daughters, Linda S. Bennett of Burlington, Gloria Harmony of Tampa, and Brenda K. Collins of Valrico; one son, Ron D. Bennett of Terre Haute, Ill.; 10 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and one brother, Glenn Edward Bennett of Burlington. Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by one son, three brothers and two sisters. Visitation will be from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday at Banks & Beals Funeral Home in LaHarpe, where the family will receive friends. The funeral for Mr. Bennett will be at 1:30 p.m. Monday at Banks & Beals Funeral Home, with the Rev. Bruce Goettsche officiating. Burial with military rites will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery in Burlington. A memorial has been established.
