Obituary
Virgil Kent Rust, 89, of West Burlington, died at 7:45 p.m. Friday, March 10, 2017, at Danville Care Center.
Born July 21, 1927 in Burlington he was the son of Raymond Roscoe and Olga Anna Hoelzen Rust. On August 5, 1951 he married Mary Ellen Voigt in Burlington.
Mr. Rust graduated from Burlington High School and served in World War II with the Navy on the USS Iowa 1945-1946 as a Fireman First Class. He worked as a machinist/lathe operator for CB&Q, Burlington Northern Railroad for 46 years retiring in 1989.
Mr. Rust was a member of West Burlington United Methodist Church and Machinist Local #531. He enjoyed woodworking especially working with his lathe at home making parts for friends and relatives. He was very much a handyman. He loved to travel, family camping vacations and spending winters in Arizona and Texas following his retirement. Virgil always liked a good joke.
Survivors include his wife of 65 years, Mary Ellen; two daughters, Karen S. (David) Strawhacker and Peggy J. Rust both of West Burlington; two granddaughters, Kyla (Mick) Henderson of St. Louis, MO and Haley Strawhacker of West Burlington; two great-grandchildren, Wyatt and Remy; one sister, Edna Gerdner of Burlington, and three nieces.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one twin sister and one brother.
The graveside funeral service and inurnment will be held at a later date in Aspen Grove Cemetery.
A memorial has been established to West Burlington United Methodist Church.
Cremation has been entrusted to Lunning Chapel.
