Howard L. "Porky" Runyon, 76, of West Burlington, died at 9:30 a.m. Sunday, March 29, 2009, at Great River Medical Center in West Burlington. Born March 23, 1933, in Iowa City, he was the son of Edward Ern and Minnie May Nichols Runyon. On June 29, 1971, he married Shirley Ann Maddox Bruhl in Oquawka, IL. Mr. Runyon worked 31 years at Champion Spark Plug. He served in the Army during the Korean War. He was active in fast pitch softball since age 15. He coached minor and Little League baseball, pitched for the Champion Spark Plugs, winning the championship six years and pitched for Oquawka and Lomax, IL, winning a championship two years in a row. He coached girls' softball and fast pitch Women's league, winning a championship. He helped boys and girls with sports programs and softball. He was a 50-year member of Eagles Lodge Aerie 150, member of U.A.W. Local 1237, and past member of Moose Lodge 579 of Burlington. He enjoyed the Chicago Cubs, and collected sports memorabilia. Survivors include his wife; five sons, Donald Runyon of Burlington, Barry Runyon of West Des Moines, Jeffery Runyon of Wycondia, Minn., Allen Bruhl of Texas, and Darrin Bruhl of West Burlington; one daughter, Paula Gustafson of Burlington; 15 grandchildren 15 great- grandchildren; and two brothers, Gene Runyon of Burlington and Ben Runyon of East Moline, IL. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother. Visitation will be from noon to 6 p.m. Sunday at Lunning Chapel in Burlington, where the family will receive friends from noon to 4 p.m. The funeral with military rites for Mr. Runyon will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Lunning Chapel, with the Rev. Dean Moberg officiating. Burial will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery in Burlington. A memorial has been established.
