Obituary
The Rev. John A. Royer, 75, of West Burlington, died at 7:45 p.m. Thursday, September 9, 2010, at Great River Medical Center in West Burlington. Born June 18, 1935, in Vincennes, he was the son of Everett Lee and Mabel Mulligan Royer. On February 15, 1958, he married Twyla F. Hilbrant in Trenton. The Rev. Royer was an electronics technician, and was an ordained Open Bible Standard Churches pastor. He was an Army veteran, serving during the Korean War. He was a 1953 graduate of Fairfield High School. He graduated from Berean School of Bible in 1979, and received his Bachelor of Art's Degree in Christian counseling from the International Bible College and Seminary. He was the former district superintendent of Southeast Iowa, serving churches in Southeast Iowa, and served on several denominational boards and committees, including the General Board of Open Bible Standard Churches. He was a member of the Church of the Open Bible in Burlington, and a chaplain for the V.F.W. Post No. 526 in Centerville. Survivors include his wife; three sons, John L. Royer of Pensacola, Fla., the Rev. Dr. Marc Royer of Goshen, Ind., and Jeff Royer of Danville; 10 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; two brothers, William Royer and Joe Royer, both of Burlington; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, five brothers and two sisters. Visitation will be from noon to 8 p.m., with family to receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Hass-Thielen Funeral Home. The funeral service for the Rev. Royer will be 10 a.m. Monday at Hass-Thielen Funeral Home, with the Rev. Dr. Marc Royer, the Pastor Mitch Royer, the Rev. Kenneth R. Petersen, and Mike Johnson officiating. Burial with full military rites will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery. A time of food and fellowship will follow at Hass-Thielen community room. A memorial has been established for the Church of the Open Bible in Burlington.
