Charles Withrow Roscum, 82, of Burlington, died at 8:12 a.m. Wednesday, March 5, 2008, at Great River Medical Center in West Burlington. Born February 6, 1926, in Burlington, Iowa, he was the son of Withrow B. and Naomi E. Meyer Roscum. On May 9, 1945, he married Bonnie Jean Bryant in Burlington. She died June 7, 2000. Mr. Roscum was the lead mechanic for Siems-John Deere Farm Equipment for 20 years. He then worked as a mechanic for the Burlington School system for 18 years. Upon retirement, he delivered auto parts for Car Quest Auto. He was a graduate of Burlington High School. He served in the Navy as a Motor Machinist Mate during World War II. He was a scoutmaster with the Boy Scouts of America. He enjoyed working in his mechanical shop at home and his garden. He was affiliated with Grace United Methodist Church in Burlington. Survivors include two sons, Dennis Roscum of Danville, and David (Patricia) Roscum of Ellicott City, MD; seven grandchildren, Jessica, Jeremiah, Chad, Abby, Brooke, Rebecca and Lindsey; six great-grandchildren, Hunter, Elyssa, Riley, Alec, Brayden and Tyler; one sister, Sylvia (Dr. Richard) Rousch of Ottumwa, Iowa; daughter-in-law Debbie Roscum of Burlington, many nieces, nephews and cousins. Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Louise Kelly; and one son, Stephen Roscum. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. Friday at Prugh's Chapel in Burlington, where the family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. The funeral for Mr. Roscum will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Grace United Methodist Church, with Pastor Trevor Davis officiating. Military Rites will be conducted by the Burlington Area Veterans Honor Guard. Following the funeral, cremation will be accorded. Graveside ash committal services will be at 11 a.m. Monday in Aspen Grove Cemetery in Burlington. In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established for Grace United Methodist Church.
