Pierre J. Roche, 66, of West Burlington, died at 10:01 p.m. Wednesday, July 28, 1999, at University Hospitals in Iowa City. Born March 31, 1933, at Cresco, he was the son of Lawrence J. and Evelyn Brokken Roche. He married Betty L. Applebee on Dec. 25, 1953, in Mount Pleasant. Mr. Roche was an Army Veteran, having served in Germany and Austria from 1954-1956. He was a 1951 graduate of Mount Pleasant High School, and a 1958 graduate of Iowa Wesleyan College, with a bachelor's degree. He worked at Commercial Credit for 10 years, and retired from the Iowa Army Ammunition Plant as a supervisor in 1995. He was a member of St. John's and St. Paul's Catholic Church, the National Committee to Secure Social Security and Medicare, American Legion Post 52 of Burlington, Knights of Columbus, and a lifetime member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9162. Survivors include his wife; three daughters, Diane Poisel, DeLaine Duke, and Dana Malloy, all of Burlington; one son, Joseph P. Roche of Burlington; eight grandchildren; four sisters, Evelyn Royal of Bethesda, Md., Madelyn McCeney of Hyattsville, Md., Margaret Kneafsey of New Mexico, and Mary Lou Elmore of Omaha, Neb.; and two brothers, the Rev. Stanley Roche and Larry Roche, both of Minnesota. He was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers. Visitation will begin at 9 a.m. Sunday in Lunning Chapel, where there will be a Christian wake service at 4 p.m., and the family will reeive friends from 4 to 6 p.m. The funeral for Mr. Roche will be at 10 a.m. Monday at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, with the Rev. John Hyland officiating. Burial will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery, with military rites conducted by VFW Post 9162 and 10102. A memorial has been established.
