Gene Roberts, 71, of Burlington, died at 2 p.m. Sunday, June 13, 2004, at his home. Born April 29, 1933, in Burlington, he was the son of Clarence Leon and Alberta Jane Eden Roberts. On May 5, 1954, he married Jolene May Walker in Burlington. She died March 21, 1999. Mr. Roberts owned and operated Roberts Upholstery since 1965. He was a 1953 graduate of Burlington High School. He was a Korean War Air Force veteran. He was a member of Des Moines Lodge No. 1, Scottish Rite Valley of Davenport, KAABA Shrine, Southeast Iowa Shrine Club, E.C. Blackmar Chapter 306 OES, Iowa Chapter #1 RAM, Zerubbabel Council No. 22 R&AM St. Olmer Commandery No. 15 KT, Kilpeck Council Knight Masons No. 64. He was a Cubmaster of Pack 8 and an adult leader of Boy Scout Troop 8. He was a member of Zion United Church of Christ. Survivors include two daughters, Paulette Upton of Burlington and Teresa Cleveland of West Des Moines; one son, Bruce Roberts of Burlington; seven grandchildren; one sister, Shirley Randall of Biggsville, Ill.; and several nieces and nephews. Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents and one infant brother. Visitation will be from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Prugh's Chapel, where the family will receive friends following a 7 p.m. Masonic service to 9 p.m. The funeral for Mr. Roberts will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Zion United Church of Christ, with the Rev. Gary Chapman officiating. Burial will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery. A memorial has been established for Burlington Masonic Lodge.
