Helen Burdette Roach, 96, of Burlington, Iowa, died at Great River Hospice House, West Burlington, Iowa, on Tuesday morning, October 8, 2013.
Born on January 10, 1917 in New London, Missouri, she was the daughter of Herbert T. and Laura King Birditt. She married Willie Roach on June 23, 1940 in Burlington, Iowa. He died on February 12, 1990.
Helen worked at the IAAP for ten years, Des Moines County Home for nine years and Schramm's for nineteen years. She was lifetime member of St. John African Methodist Episcopal Church, a member of Order of Eastern Star and St. Elmo Chapter #3, where she was past Worthy Matron. Helen enjoyed volunteering for the community in both the “Share Iowa” and Teddy Bear Picnics programs. She also served on the City Planning Commission and The League of Women’s Voters for a number of years. She received the Governor’s Volunteer Award in 1995 from Gov. Terry Branstad.
She is survived by one son, William Samuel (Mary) Roach of Topeka, Kansas; three daughters, Cynthia Dianne Eaves of Burlington, Iowa, Laura Alice Baker of West Burlington, Iowa and Tamarra Sue (Robert) Washington of Burlington, Iowa; 10 grandchildren; 29 great-grandchildren; and one sister, LaVeine Birditt of Peoria, Illinois.
She was preceded in death by her husband and parents.
Funeral services for Helen Burdette Roach will be held on Saturday, October 12, 2013 at 12:00 p.m. at Prugh's Chapel, Burlington, Iowa. Rev. Robin Barrow, current pastor, will officiate. Interment will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery.
The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service on Saturday. Friends may call on Friday in Prugh’s Chapel from 8:00 a.m. until 8:00 p.m. A memorial has been established for St. John African Methodist Episcopal Church. Condolences may be left at www.prughfuneralservice.com.
