Michael Scott Riney, 51, of Burlington, died at 2:08 PM Friday, June 27, 2014, at the Great River Medical Center in West Burlington.
Born August 2, 1962, in Burlington, he was the son of Jimilee Michael and Erna Catherine Thirtyacre Riney.
Michael worked as a stock manager for Office Depot in Corpus Christi, Texas and Des Moines. When he moved back to Burlington, he worked at Menards. Most recently, Michael worked as a night stocker at Hy-vee and at Dollar General.
He was a 1981 graduate of Burlington High School and he attended Southeastern Community College for auto body. He later attended the University of Texas in Houston.
He was a U.S. Army and Coast Guard Veteran, serving in the Army from 1982 until 1987 and in the Coast Guard from 1987 to 1992. In the Coast Guard, he worked with the Drug Enforcement Agency out of Miami. Later, he was a search and rescue fireman. His ending rank was Storekeeper Third Class.
He was a charter member of Calvary Baptist Church. He enjoyed flying and trains including train memorabilia. He also loved to terrorize his nieces and nephews.
Survivors include his mother, Erna Catherine Riney of Burlington; one brother, Mark (Kerry) Riney of Des Moines; two sisters, Kimberly (Kevin) Nihart of Ankeny and Dawn (Larry) Helling of Fort Madison; 13 nieces and nephews, Jennifer (David) Hartwig, Christopher Sessions, Zachary (Kailee) Nihart, Aaron Sessions, Joshua Sessions, Kayla Riney, Karlee Sessions, Dakota Nihart, Brianne Riney, Cody Nihart, Madison Riney, Derrik Helling, Macy Helling; and several aunts, uncles, and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his father, grandparents, and one uncle.
Visitation will be from 9:00 AM until 10:00 AM Tuesday, July 1, 2014 at Thielen Funeral Home, where the family will receive friends.
The funeral service for Mr. Riney will be 10:00 AM Tuesday, July 1, 2014, at Thielen Funeral Home with Pastor Dan Deatrick, Pastor Kevin Nihart, and Pastor Aaron Sessions officiating. Burial will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery. Full military honors will be rendered by the Burlington Area Veterans Honor Guard. A time of food and fellowship will be held in the community room at Thielen Funeral Home following the burial.
