V. Merle Remmers, 89, of Burlington, Iowa, passed away Sunday, June 6, 2010. He was born in Auburn, Nebraska on May 14, 1921, the son of Dirk and Anna Frericks Remmers. On December 28, 1942, he married LouElla Lunzman at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Auburn. Merle attended Lincoln Flying School in Lincoln, Neb., graduating in 1941. In 1945 he came to Burlington and founded Remmers Air Service, which was merged with CD "Tom" Tomkins' Hawkeye Flyers in 1954 to form Remmers-Tomkins Flight Service. Merle was a devoted member of Trinity Lutheran Church and served on the church council. He was a member of Rotary Club, Burlington Golf Club, and OX5 Aviation Pioneers. In 2003 he received the Charles Taylor award for over 50 years of service to the Aviation Industry. Merle and LouElla loved to travel, and he was an avid golfer. Survivors include his son Ronald (Nancy Lee) of Burlington, Iowa; daughter Nancy (James) Sheerer of Cedar Falls, Iowa; 6 grandchildren, Rob (Aubrey), Anne, Jennifer, Robert, Anna, and Sara, and 3 great-grandchildren, Angela, Reagan, and Madison. He was preceded in death by his wife, five brothers, and one sister. Graveside ash committal services for V. Merle Remmers will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, June 11, 2010, at Aspen Grove Cemetery. Rev. Erick Swanson will officiate. Memorials have been established for Trinity Lutheran Church Scholarship Fund, OX5 Aviation Pioneers, and Alzheimer's Association.
