Marie Alice Reid, 98, of Burlington, died Thursday, May 22, 2008, at Great River Medical Center in West Burlington. Born February 2, 1910, near Dakota City, she was the daughter of William Curtis and Tannake Verbrugge Mitchell. On January 11, 1935, she married Beryl William Reid in Minnesota. He died January 3, 1986. Mrs. Reid was a schoolteacher at the age of 17 and continued teaching for 39 years. She graduated at age 15 from the Academy in Canova, S.D., received her bachelor of arts from Iowa Wesleyan College in 1959, and completed work toward her master's degree at Western Illinois University in Macomb. She enjoyed her piano and gave piano lessons for more than 60 years, giving her last piano lesson three weeks ago to 10 students. She was a member of First Congregational Church of Burlington, and was a past president and member of the Burlington School Board and Friend of the Burlington Public Library. Survivors include three children, Betty Hammitt of Omaha, Neb., Robert Reid of Burlington, and Sally Tharp of Kingsley; 10 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren, one great-great-granddaughter; nieces and nephews. Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, one sister and three brothers. Visitation will be from noon to 7 p.m. Tuesday at Lunning Chapel, with family receiving friends from 5 to 7 p.m. The funeral for Mrs. Reid will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Lunning Chapel, with the Rev. Frank Beaty officiating. Burial will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery. A memorial has been established for the Burlington Public Library.
