Shirley Rath, 53, of Kalona died Thursday, March 11, 2010, at her home following a 10-month bout with cancer. Born December 28, 1956, in Burlington, she was the daughter of Carl J. and Gladys Hillyard Schulz. Ms. Rath worked for Washington County Public Health. She graduated from Mediapolis High School in 1975, and Iowa Wesleyan College in 1979 with a degree in nursing. She was a member of Kalona United Methodist Church. She enjoyed fishing, reading, traveling, and visiting. Survivors include one son, Adam Carl Rath of Waukee; one daughter, Allie Jean Rath of Kalona; two brothers, John Schulz of Burlington and Paul Schulz of Charlotte, N.C.; two sisters, Jane Ferguson of West Des Moines and Diane Pfadenhauer of Roland; nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents. Visitation will be from 1 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Peterseim Funeral Home in Kalona, where family will receive friends from 1 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. The funeral for Ms. Rath will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Kalona Mennonite Church in Kalona, with the Revs. Gerry Kahler and Mike Orthel officiating. Burial will be at 3 p.m. Monday in Aspen Grove Cemetery in Burlington. Memorials have been established for the Tall Grass Prairie Center at UNI and Hospice.
