Leonard Charles Henry Powell, 88, of Burlington, died at 10:15 a.m. Tuesday, January 16, 2007, at the Morning Sun Care Center. Born August 18, 1918, in Kedderminster, England, he was the son of John and Bertha Hill Powell. On March 26, 1972, he married Garnita Joan Mooday in Kirkwood, Illinois. He served in the Navy during World War II with the Convoy fleet. He worked for Wells Pet Food in Monmouth, Illinois, Gates Rubber Co. of Galesburg, Illinois, and IAAP in Middletown, Iowa. He was of the Presbyterian faith. He enjoyed woodworking and was a big Iowa Hawkeye's fan. Survivors include his wife of Burlington; two sons, Larry Powell of Monmouth and Dan Powell of Galesburg; two daughters, Becky Powell and Penny Powell, both of Galesburg; two stepdaughters, Teresa Lyon of West Valley City, Utah, and Marjorie McCoy of Monmouth; one stepson, Kenneth Bowling of Alexis, Illinois; nine grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; three sisters, Alice Gracey, Irene Doom and Francis Statter, all of Burlington; nieces; and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, two sisters and two brothers. Rev. Dr. Frank Beaty will officiate, with burial in Aspen Grove Cemetery. Military Rites will be conducted by the Burlington Area Veterans Honor Guard. A memorial has been established for the Des Moines County Humane Society.
