Glen J. Porter, age 84, of Burlington, died at 4:28 p.m. Saturday, August 12, 2006, at Great River Medical Center. Born December 1, 1921 in Talmage, Nebraska, he was the son of James E. Porter and Cora Reed Porter. He was a Navy veteran; assigned to one of the first LST's to go to sea. He was in the invasions of Sicily, Salerno, Anzio and Omaha Beach. On January 16, 1946 he married Delores Dermann in Nebraska City, Nebraska. The Porter's moved to Burlington in 1947 where Glen was employed by Hotel Burlington as assistant manager and catering manager. In 1953, he joined Klein Manufacturing Company as a salesman and was later appointed vice president and sales manager. In the late 1940's he served as Vice President of the Jr. Chamber of Commerce. He was a former member of Carthage Lake Club. He was a member of the Burlington Golf Club, the Moose Lodge, DAV, and the Kiwanis Club, where he served as President from 1970-1971. He was a member of the First Christian Church-Disciples of Christ. Glen's hobbies included golf and fishing. Survivors include his wife of 60 years Delores "Dee" Porter; three daughters, Susan (William) Bauer of Burlington, Karen (Dennis) Fenton of Cedar Rapids, and Debra (Steve) Cain of O'Fallon, Illinois; a son Scott (Jeri) Porter of Waukee, Iowa; a brother Jim (Elberta) Porter of Omaha, Nebraska; and a brother-in-law Ken (Shirley) Dermann of Lincoln, Nebraska; nine grandchildren also survive as well as nieces and nephews. His parents and two sisters preceded him in death. According to his wishes, his body has been cremated Memorials have been established for First Christian Church-Disciples of Christ or Burlington Kiwanis Club.
