William E. Poland, Sr., 74, of Mount Sterling, Ill., and formerly of Burlington, died at 8:02 p.m. Tuesday, December 29, 2009, at Heritage Manor in Mount Sterling. Born May 6, 1935, in Keokuk, he was the son of Donald George and Susie Robertson Poland. In 1958, he married Beverly Sowden. On September 3, 1966, he married Wanda N. McGlauchlen Bunte in Peoria, Ill. Mr. Poland worked 21 years at the Iowa Army Ammunition Plant in Middletown and retired from Mississippi Bakery, Aldi Inc., after 17 years service. He served four years in the Air Force, 16 years in the Air Force Reserve, and three years in the Army Reserve. He was a member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church in Lebanon, MO, and lifetime member of the VFW. Survivors include his wife; two sons, William E. Poland, Jr. and Robert Poland, both of Burlington; one daughter, Bonnie Mizer of West Burlington; six grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Arthur W. Poland of Dayton, Ore., and David H. Poland of Roswell, N.M.; and one sister, Susie A. Larkens of Azusa, Calif. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother. The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m. Monday at Lunning Chapel in Burlington. The funeral with military rites for Mr. Poland will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Lunning Chapel, with the Rev. David West officiating. Burial will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery in Burlington. A memorial has been established for Pleasant Grove Baptist Church in Lebanon.
