Douglas E. Poffenbarger, 78, of Burlington, died at 3:58 p.m. Sunday, June 13, 2010, at his home. Born September 20, 1931, in New Boston, Ill., he was the son of Richard Earl and Letha Houston Poffenbarger. On June 6, 1954, he married Viola L. Patton in Burlington. She died September 5, 2007. Mr. Poffenbarger worked for J.I. Case Co. for more than 30 years, retiring in 1996. He served in the Army during the Korean War. He was a member of Grace United Methodist Church and VFW Post 10102. He was a Chicago Cubs and Burlington Bees baseball fan. He enjoyed traveling. Survivors include two daughters, Kathy Holeton of Franklin, Tenn., and Linda Svoboda of Topeka, Kan.; two sons, Jim Poffenbarger and Wayne Poffenbarger, both of Burlington; 11 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; two sisters, Kay Mask of Amarillo, Texas, and Gretchen Mitchell of Newton; nieces and nephews. Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by one grandchild, his parents, and one brother. Visitation will be from noon to 7 p.m. today at Hass-Thielen Funeral Home in Burlington, where the family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. The funeral for Mr. Poffenbarger will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Hass-Thielen Funeral Home with the Rev. Trevor Davis officiating. Burial with military rites will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery in Burlington. A memorial has been established.
