Lela Ruth Pietzsch, 97, of Burlington, died at 10:59 a.m. Thursday, September 9, 2010, at Great River Medical Center in West Burlington. Born June 28, 1913, in Macksburg, she was the daughter of Samuel Nathan and Amy May Waddell Shaffer. On October 15, 1935, she married Joseph Frederick Heck in Burlington. He died July 15, 1978. On October 12, 1983, she married Ferdinand Henry Pietzsch in Burlington. He died February 3, 1993. Mrs. Pietzsch was a homemaker. She graduated from Burlington High School in 1931. She was a member of First United Church of Christ, where she was a 70-plus-years member of Women's Fellowship, and was secretary, elder, president and delegate to the synod meeting in Des Moines and Cleveland. She was a former member of Federated Women's Club. She was involved with Stitch and Rip and her card club. She enjoyed gardening, sewing, knitting, and crocheting. Survivors include one son, Charles Frederick "Pete" Heck of Chesterfield, MO; two grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; one sister, Georgiana Louise Simpson of Stronghurst, Ill.; one brother, Blair Shaffer of Mediapolis; nieces and nephews. Besides her husbands, she was preceded in death by seven brothers and two sisters. No visitation is planned. The body has been cremated. The memorial service for Mrs. Pietzsch will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at First United Church of Christ in Burlington, with the Rev. JudyAnn Morse officiating. Private burial will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery. Friends and family are invited for a light lunch at the church following the service. A memorial has been established for First United Church of Christ.
