Gary Robert Pickering, 65, of rural Wapello, died Sunday, November 15, 2009, at his home. Born February 15, 1944, in Yankton, S.D, he was the son of Glenn and Elva Cook Pickering. On August 12, 1967, he married Maureen Kay "Mitzi" Senner in Freeman, S.D. She died April 12, 1979. On August 2, 1980, he married Judi M. Bence Riddle in Oakville. Mr. Pickering taught at Anthon-Otto School in Northwest Iowa, and taught social studies at Wapello High School. He coached girls track and boys and girls cross country, retiring in 2009. He graduated from Yankton High School in 1962. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in education and a Master of Arts degree in Social Studies at the University of South Dakota. He was a member of Wapello Education Association, National Education Association, and had been a member and past regional president of Iowa State Education Association. He enjoyed caring for his yard, fishing, gardening, and sharing his produce. Survivors include his wife; one daughter, Brandii Wherry of Bakersfield, Calif.; one brother, Kenneth Pickering of Pierre, S.D.; and one sister, Carol Schulz of Lincoln, Neb. Besides his first wife, he was preceded in death by his parents. Friends may call from 1 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Dudgeon-McCulley funeral Home in Wapello, where the family will receive friends from 4 to 7 p.m. The funeral for Mr. Pickering will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Dudgeon-McCulley Funeral Home, with Pastor Dan Doolin officiating. Burial will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery in Burlington. A memorial has been established
