William "Tick" Stewart, 86, of Burlington, Iowa, died at 9:35 a.m. Tuesday, June 15, 2010, at Great River Hospice House in West Burlington, Iowa. Born July 17, 1923, in Burlington, he was the son of William Marsden and Eva Cable Stewart. On April 17, 1951, he married Betty Lou Peterson in Burlington, Iowa. Mr. Stewart worked as an inspector at Iowa Army Ammunition Plant in Middletown, Iowa. He attended Burlington High School, where he earned nine letters in sports, played running back for Coach Tackleson, and was a letter winner in football and baseball at Southeastern Community College. He was a high speed radio operator, 11th Bomb Group, 98th Bomb Squadron in the Pacific Theater during WWII. He was of the Protestant faith. He played fast pitch softball for the Moose and Hawk-Eye Motors. He was a Cubs, Hawkeyes, and Bears fan. He enjoyed work and fishing. Survivors include his wife, Betty Lou Stewart of Burlington; two sons, William B. (Karen) Stewart and Bradley S. (Tammy) Stewart, both of Burlington; four grandsons, Doug, Kory, Bennett, and Owen; one sister, Delores Gerst of Gladstone, IL; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, Orville, Melvin, Lloyd, Wesley; and three sisters, Marie, Mabel, and Frances. No formal visitation is planned. As per his wishes, his body has been cremated. The graveside memorial service will be at 10 a.m. Saturday in Aspen Grove Cemetery, with the family officiating. Friends may meet at the Sunnyside entrance at 9:45 a.m. Military rites will be conducted by the Burlington Area Veterans Honor Guard.
