Obituary

Verda Katherine Peterson, 91, of Bishop Drum Retirement Center in Johnston, formerly of Mediapolis, died Saturday, November 28, 2009, at the Center. Born April 18, 1918, in Burlington, she was the daughter of Otto and Lydia Wallentine Stiefel. On February 14, 1946, she married LeRoy E. Peterson in Burlington. He died June 10, 2004. Mrs. Peterson worked in offices at Metropolitan Life Insurance Co. in Burlington, and Willis DeSpain Insurance after moving to Mediapolis. She graduated from Burlington High School in 1936, and from Burlington College of Commerce. She was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Mediapolis, where she taught Sunday School and was a member of the choir, Altar Guild, and WELCA. She served as a Boy Scout den mother, and was a member of Mediapolis Study Club. She enjoyed music and playing piano at church, the care center and at home. Survivors include two sons, Steven Peterson of San Diego, and David Peterson of Urbandale; and one grandchild. Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers. The family will receive friends from 10 to 11 a.m. Friday at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Mediapolis. The memorial service from Mrs. Peterson will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Immanuel Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Jerleen Schlesser officiating. Burial will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery in Burlington. A memorial has been established for Immanuel Lutheran Church. Hagele and Honts Funeral Home in Mediapolis is in charge of arrange- ments.
