Marcella Isadora Petersen, 90, of Mediapolis, died at 11:00 AM Friday, March 14, 2014, at Prairie Ridge Care & Rehabilitation in Mediapolis.
Born July 31, 1923, in Des Moines County, IA, she was the son of Clyde and Emma Seusens Holsteen. On June 20, 1945, she married Glenn P. Petersen in Burlington.
Together they had five daughters, Nancy, Glenda, Lois, Karen, and Diane. Glenn died November 17, 2008. Marcella worked for Iowa Southern Utilities. After retiring she worked part-time at Pies on Parade. She attended Fairview Benton School and was a 1940 graduate of Mediapolis High School. After graduation she attended Burlington College of Commerce. Glenn and Marcella farmed north of Burlington for 47 years, retiring in 1983 and moved to Burlington in 1991. She was a member of United Methodist Church and former member of Des Moines County Farm Bureau. She was active as a 4-H leader and enjoyed gardening square dancing, baking and crocheting. In later years she was a quilter with the United Methodist Church. Survivors include three daughters, Glenda Lyons of Mediapolis, Lois (Steve) Elliott of Cherokee, IA, and Karen (Mike) Darnell of Davenport, IA; 11 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; one great-great grandchild; two sisters, Mamie Breder of Mediapolis, and Silvia (Victor) Busse of Burlington, and several nieces and nephews. Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by parents, two daughters, Nancy and Diane, three brothers, John Holsteen, Warren Holsteen, and Robert Holsteen, and one sister, Helen Scott. The family will receive friends from 9:00 AM until 10:00 Wednesday, March 19, 2014, at Thielen Funeral Home. The funeral service for Mrs. Petersen will be 10:00 AM Wednesday, March 19, 2014, at Thielen Funeral Home with Rev. Melisa Bracht-Wagner officiating. Burial will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery. A time of food and fellowship will be held in the community room at Thielen Funeral Home following the burial.
