Elmer Perkins
Elmer LeRoy Perkins, 84, of Burlington, died at 1:09 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 7, 2002, at Great RIver Medical Center in West Burlington.
Born Oct. 30, 1918, in Toolesboro, he was the son of Lloyd C. and Minnie M. Wilson Perkins. On June 29, 1940, he married Matilda Cecelia Block in Burlington. She died Aug. 15, 1998.
Mr. Perkins worked as a clerk for Burlington Northern Railway for 38 years. He retired in 1978.
She was a member of Asbury United Methodist Church, where he was treasurer for more that 30 years and served on the audit committee. He was president of the National Association of Retired and Veterans Railways Employess, BSNF Veterans Association and T.C.U.(Transportation Communication Union). He served in the Air Force as an airplane mechanic with the rank of sergeant.
Survivors include three daughters, Celia Crawford and Lois Wiegard, both of Burlington, and Margery Hasbrouck of Mount Pleasant, S.C.; 11 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; three stepgrandchildren; nine step-great-grandchildren; one sister, Mildred Noble of Morning Sun; one brother, Leslie Perkins of Morning Sun; and several nieces and nephews.
Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents, stepmother, Effie Harrington, and one infant sister.
Visitation will be from 9 a.m to 8 p.m. Sunday at Lunning chapel, where the family will receive friends from 3 to 5 p.m.
The funeral for Mr. Perkins will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Asbury United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Richard Purcell officiating. Burial will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery.
