Ethel E. Bednar, 90, of Burlington, died at 7:47 p.m. Wednesday, November 18, 2009, at New London Nursing and Rehab Center. Born July 6, 1919, in Hamilton, she was the daughter of Charles A. and Cecilia Raymie Thomas. On October 23, 1940, she married John A. Bednar in Lovilia. He died June 29, 1991. Mrs. Bednar worked at Monroe County Courthouse, in production at Iowa Army Ammunition Plant in Middletown, and as a nurses aid for about 20 years at Burlington Medical Center in the pediatric unit. She was a graduate of Lovilia High School. She was a member of SS. Mary and Patrick Catholic Church, Legion of Mary and Altar and Rosary Society. She volunteered in the parochial school systems, helping children learn to read, and was active in the Holiday Rambler Camping Club. She enjoyed fishing and growing roses and flowers. Survivors include two daughters, Donna Tessier-Leathers of Burlington, and Sharon Gard of West Burlington; two grandchildren; three step-grandchildren;; four step-great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews. Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents and three sisters. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Lunning Chapel in Burlington. The funeral for Mrs. Bednar will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Lunning Chapel, with the Rev. David Steinle officiating. Burial will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery in Burlington. A memorial has been established for PAW No Kill Animal Shelter
