Mrs. Carolyn Pence, 84, of Burlington, died at 5:05 p.m. Tuesday, April 19, 2011, at Burlington Care Center. Mrs. Pence was born December 1, 1926, in Nashville, Tennessee. On August 14, 1945, she married Robert Irvin. He preceded her in death on May 1, 1980. On June 26, 1981, she married Floyd Pence. He also preceded her in death on May 29, 2000. Mrs. Pence worked as a civil servant while her husband was serving active duty during World War II. She also was a homemaker, an accomplished pianist, and taught piano lessons. Mrs. Pence was a member of SS John and Paul Catholic Church. She enjoyed gardening, yard work, playing piano, and being with her grandchildren. Survivors include one daughter, Julie (Mike) Ertz of Norwalk; two grandchildren, Eric (Anna) Ertz and Emily (Greg Thompson) Ertz; and six great-grandchildren, Brayden Thompson and Alivia Thompson, Eliza Ertz, Lydia Gipe, Jackson Gipe, Emma Van Pelt. She was preceded in death by her parents, both husbands, and one brother, Wayne Bevels. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. today in Lunning Chapel. A private family inurnment will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery on Friday. According to Mrs. Pence's wishes, cremation has been accorded.
