On Monday, December 19, 2016, at 12:05 AM, our beloved wife, mother, grandmother, Big Mama entered into eternal rest.
Pearlie Mae Burrage Payne was born in DeKalb, Mississippi on March 15, 1937, to the late Lee Arthur and Annie Laura (Shumate) Burrage. Pearl was the youngest girl and 5th child out of 7 children born to this union. She attended school at Gray Ridge and New Madrid High School. Pearl was baptized at New Mount Zion Baptist Church Essex, MO.
In 1960, Pearl moved to Burlington. On April 16, 1969, she was united in holy matrimony to Howard Payne.
Pearl was a member of Union Baptist Church under Rev. Donald Robinson and Rev. William Hornaday. Pearl was a member of Second Baptist Church, Ft. Madison where she served as chairman of Pastor's Aid, on the Mother Board and Kitchen Committee until she could no longer serve. She was a member of St. Elmo Chapter #3 of The Order of Eastern Star.
Pearl was employed by Holiday Inn for 12 - 14 years, Kings, and Hotel Burlington as head cook. Pearl worked for Bob McCannon, Dr. & Mrs. Jim Small, and Mr. & Mrs. Ed Daily for years.
Pearl never met a stranger, she would talk to anybody. Pearl was known as "mother" to many. Throughout her illness she kept a pleasurable attitude, she called Great River Medical Center was her second home. She would always tell the nurses I will see you at Wal-Mart. Pearl enjoyed working and maintaining her flower and vegetable garden. She enjoyed collecting and making new recipes, canning, baking, making preserves, quilting (she made a quilt for each of her grandchildren), and crocheting.
Pearl leaves to treasure her memories, her husband, Howard, her children: Robert Barber of St. Paul, MN, Leon Barber of St. Paul, MN, Annie P. (Nathaniel) Patterson of Harlem, GA, Diane Barber of St. Paul, MN, Jenna Walker of Minneapolis, MN, and Shelia (Andrew) Worley of Kansas City, MO. Her sisters, Effie "T" Walton of Alton, IL and Cullie M. Thomas of Burlington; A special nephew, Earnest Nelson of Siskeston, MO; She also leaves 10 grandchildren, 6 great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, and close friends..
She was preceded in death by her parents; one son, Allan; one grandson, Brandon Payne; three brothers, Otha "Joe Lewis" Burrage, Albert Burrage and Leroy Bourrage; and one sister, Annie Lee Brown; one sister-in-law, Jewell Bourrage; and three brother-in-laws, Fred Walton, Tommy Thomas, Sr, and Jack Nelson.
Visitation will be from noon until 7:00 PM with the family to receive friends from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM Thursday, December 22, 2016, at Prugh's Chapel, downtown.
The funeral service for Mrs. Payne will be 11:00 AM Friday, December 23, 2016, at Prugh's Chapel, downtown with Pastor Wilburn Cole officiating. Burial will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery. A time of food and fellowship will be held at Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church following the burial.
A memorial has been established for Second Baptist Church in Ft. Madison.
