Jesse Beckwith, 76, of Burlington, former Wapello resident, died at 8 pm Wednesday in St. Francis Hospital, Burlington after a short illness.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 am Monday at the Prugh Chapel in Burlington with burial in Aspen Grove cemetery.
Mr. Beckwith was born June 2, 1895. He came to Wapello at the age of four and lived here until the age of 40 when he moved to Muscatine and then Burlington.
He worked for the Ed Garret family for many years having worked with the racehorses Mr. Garret owned. Jessee Beckwith was more commonly known as “Pony Garrett” by those in the racing circles.
Mr. Beckwith served in the Army during WWI. He was a member of St. John’s AME Church in Burlington.
Funeral services for Mr. Jesse Beckwith, who passed away March 10, 1971, will be held in Prugh’s Chapel Monday morning at 10:30. Rev. Mr. Rbert G. Clay will officiate. Interment will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery.
