Charles Lawrence "Larry" Paule, 91, died on Tuesday morning, November 19, 2013, at Sunnybrook Assisted Living, Burlington, Iowa.
Born on January 5, 1922 in Burlington, he was the son of Dr. C. Lawrence and Scena Brodersen Paule.
Mr. Paule was a 1939 graduate of Burlington High School and a 1942 graduate of University of Iowa with a bachelor's degree in Business Administration. While in college he played herald trumpet with the University of Iowa marching band.
He served for 39 months in the Army Air Force during World War II as a sergeant in the finance department, stationed in India and China.
On June 6, 1948, he married Wilma "Billie" Van Duren in Burlington.
Mr. Paule was manager and part owner of Paule Jewelry, representing the third generation in the business. He was a jeweler and certified gemologist for over 50 years, retiring in 1989.
Mr. Paule was a member of Bethany Lutheran Church where he sang in the choir and was also a member of Senior Saints. He was a member of Kiwanis where he had over 43 years of perfect attendance and played his trumpet at weekly meetings. He was a member of the YMCA for over 50 years and leader of the Keenagers. He was a member of Silver Singers and Square-N-Aiders square dance club. He was active at the Steamboat Senior Center where he served as treasurer for 10 years and played trumpet in the Harmonaires Jazz Dance Band. Mr. Paule qualified to play table tennis in the National Senior Olympics in 2003 and 2005, and he earned a gold medal at the Iowa Senior Olympics in both singles and doubles in 2007. He donated over 19 gallons of blood to Mississippi Valley Regional Blood Center where he was a volunteer. He was also a volunteer at the Great River Medical Center. He was frequently called upon to play "Taps" at military funerals and ceremonies. He enjoyed ballroom dancing and playing bridge.
Survivors include three children, Charles (Maruja) Paule of Westerville, Ohio, Beth Palmer of Hershey, Pennsylvania, and William Joseph (Linda) Paule of Boulder, Colorado; six grandchildren, Lawrence, Gisele, Steven, David, Jennifer and James; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife and by his twin sister, Eloise Anderson.
The family will receive friends on Tuesday, November 26 at Lunning Funeral Chapel from 5:00 until 7:00pm. The memorial service for Larry Paule will be held at 10:00am on Wednesday, November 27, 2013 at Bethany Lutheran Church, Burlington, Iowa. Pastor Rick Biedermann will officiate. The Burlington Area Veterans Honor Guard will conduct military rites. There will be a church luncheon immediately following the services.
A memorial in his honor has been established for the Burlington YMCA.
