Obituary
Wilma Josephine “Billie” Paule, 91, died on Saturday morning, August 3, 2013 at Blair House, Burlington, Iowa.
Born on December 1, 1921, near New Sharon, Iowa, she was the daughter of Albert A. and Johanna Bartels Van Duren.
Billie attended country grade school for seven years next to her farm home plus one year in Leighton, Iowa. She graduated from Pella High School and then attended Central College in Pella, Iowa, where she earned a two-year teaching degree. Later in life, she attended Iowa Wesleyan College and received a B.A. degree at age 50.
She started teaching school in northern Iowa, and then moved to Burlington in 1946. While she was teaching in Burlington, she met and married C. Lawrence “Larry” Paule in June 1948.
She was a member of Bethany Lutheran Church where she participated in Rebecca Women’s Church Circle and Senior Saints. She was also a member of: P.E.O Sisterhood, King’s Daughters What-So-Ever Circle (former president of the board), two book clubs, the Shakespeare Club, the Friends of the Symphony, the Friends of the Library and the Burlington Golf Club. She loved to read and enjoyed playing bridge.
Survivors include her husband, C. Lawrence “Larry” Paule of Burlington; three children, Charles (Maruja) Paule of Westerville, Ohio, Beth Palmer of Hershey, Pennsylvania, and William Joseph (Linda) Paule of Boulder, Colorado; six grandchildren, Lawrence, Gisele, Steven, David, Jennifer and James; several nieces and nephews.
Her parents; two brothers, Henry and Melvin Van Duren; and five sisters, Dorothy Vander Wilt, Albertha Van Duren, Alda Mae Gosselink, Angelina McDonough and Joyce Martyn preceded her in death.
The memorial service for Wilma “Billie” Paule will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, August 7, 2013 at Bethany Lutheran Church, Burlington, Iowa. Pastor Rick Biedermann will officiate. Private interment of ashes will be at Aspen Grove Cemetery at a later time. Cremation has been entrusted to the care of Prugh Funeral Service.
The family will receive friends from 5:00 until 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday evening at Prugh’s Chapel. A memorial in her honor has been established for the Burlington Public Library
