Grace Irene McDonald Beckman, 92, of Burlington died at 8:40 p.m. Saturday, February 7, 2009, at GRMC-Klein Unit in Burlington. Born March 1, 1916, in Garland, Ia., she was the daughter of John Dwight and Doris Elma Brown McDonald. On February 25, 1941, she married J. Edward Beckman in Dodgeville, Ia. He died August 22, 1996. Grace Beckman was a homemaker and worked as a bookkeeper at Holiday Shell. She was a member of SS. Mary & Patrick Catholic Church in West Burlington, St. Mary's Altar and Rosary Society, Knights of Columbus Auxiliary and Keenagers. She was one of the 12 original members of the "Lunch Bunch". Grace was an avid reader, fantastic cook, loved to garden and tend her flowers. She had a keen sense of current affairs and of what was right in this world. Her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren were the joy of her life. Survivors include three daughters, Barbara (Tim) Farrell, Patricia Weiland and Joanne (Burton) Prugh all of Burlington; two sons, John (Maureen) Beckman of Waterloo, Ia., and Thomas Beckman of Royal Palm Beach, Fla.; seven grandsons, Ken, Michael, Steve (Karyl) and Nicholas (Liana) Weiland, John (Deanna) Farrell, Aaron (Jessica) and Cody Beckman; five granddaughters, Shawn Ryan, Lindsay (John) Fruehling, Molly Prugh, Amanda (Chad) Allard and Kelsey Beckman; six great-granddaughters, Meghan, Caitlin, Aidan and Gwyneth Ryan, Hannah Fruehling and Megan Weiland; two great-grandsons, Coulter Fruehling and Benjamin Allard; one sister, Ruth Bucci of Burlington; three brothers, Leonard McDonald of Barnwell, S.C., W. Dale McDonald of Springfield, Mo., and Harry D. McDonald of Golden, Colo.; nieces and nephews; great-nieces and nephews. Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents and one sister, Laurel Hugg. The rosary will be recited at 6:00 p.m. Wednesday in Prugh's Chapel following the family will be present to greet friends until 8:00 p.m. Music will be provided by the Des Moines County Resurrection Choir. The Mass of Christian Burial for Grace Beckman will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at SS. Mary & Patrick Catholic Church in West Burlington with the Rev. David Steinle. Burial will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery. Memorials have been established for Great River Hospice, SS. Mary & Patrick Catholic Church and Hope Haven Area Development Center.
