Obituary
Roger L. Beckert, 64, of Burlington, died at 5:30 p.m. Thursday, January 8, 2009, at Great River Hospice House in West Burlington. Born May 10, 1944, in Fort Madison, he was the son of Wilfred and Gertrude Brinkschroeder Beckert. On March 18, 1983, he married Karen Hulse Fillmore in Burlington. Mr. Beckert was a diesel truck mechanic for 35 years, working in an auto body. He had been employed at American Ordnance. He was a 1963 graduate of Aquinas High School and completed the Southeast Community College Auto Body Course in 2001 with honors. He was a Vietnam Army veteran stationed in Germany from 1965 to 1967. He attended both St. Paul's Catholic Church and First Christian Church (Disciples). He taught Sunday School and M & M Club at First Christian Church (Disciples) for 27 years. He was a member of Phi Theta Kappa High Honor Fraternity, and enjoyed working on cars, gardening, taking care of his tomatoes and fishing. Survivors include his wife; one daughter, Wendy Ivkovic of Chicago, IL; two sons, Jeff Beckert of St. Joseph, MO, and A. J. Beckert of Fort Madison; one stepson, Kory Fillmore of Burlington; two stepdaughters, Kara Reyes of Burlington and Kendra Huntington of Mediapolis; 10 grandchildren; one brother, Randy Beckert of Fort Madison; and three nieces. He was preceded in death by his parents. Visitation will be from noon to 8 p.m. Monday at Lunning Chapel, with family receiving friends from 6 to 8 p.m. The funeral for Mr. Beckert will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at First Christian Church (Disciples), with the Revs. Tom Smith, Patrick Hilgendorf and Dean Benton officiating. Burial with military rites wil be in Aspen Grove Cemetery. Memorials have been established
