Mr. Charles William Orndoff, 83, of Burlington died at 7:50 a.m. Thursday, January 17, 2013, at Great River Medical Center - Klein Center.
He was born in San Antonio, Texas January 19, 1929 to Roy and Emma McGraw Orndoff. They moved to Kirkwood, Illinois the same year where he later attended elementary and high school. He married Sylvia Marcine Hohl from Argyle, Iowa on March 23, 1949.
He served in the Sixth Infantry Division of the Illinois State Militia prior to enlisting with the Naval Air. As a veteran of World War II he served with the Naval Air Transport Service in the South Pacific with occupational forces in Guam and Okinawa.
After his discharge from the military, Charles entered the insurance business with Metropolitan Life in April 1957 in Keokuk, Iowa as a debit agent. He was promoted to insurance consultant in 1959 when he and his family moved to Burlington. Later he was promoted to assistant manager, then sales manager and then branch manager. After 35 years with Metropolitan Life he opened his own insurance brokerage in West Burlington, Orndoff and Associates. In 2004 he and his wife Sylvia who helped with the business moved their office to 208 Jefferson where they retired in December 2012.
He was a member of Metropolitan Veterans Association for Iowa, Illinois and Indiana and was president three times.
He was a member of the American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, past governor of the Moose Lodge and past president of Cascade Boating Association. He served on the Planning Commission and the Riverfront Advisory Commission for the city of Burlington for a total of 23 years.
Charlie was a patriotic American who loved his country, the city of Burlington and the Mississippi River where one of his greatest joys was to be fishing in his boat. He enjoyed sports, especially watching the Iowa Hawkeyes football and basketball games, gardening and taking care of his yard, helping people, and playing with his grandchildren.
Survivors include his wife, Sylvia; two children, Vicky Nigro (Fred) of Colorado Springs, Colorado and Lori Lock of Burlington; four grandchildren, Charlie and Alex Lock of Burlington and Melissa Bahnson and Heather Hagan of Colorado Springs, Colorado; five great grandchildren; nieces and nephews.
Preceding him in death were his grandparents, his parents, two sisters, one niece and one nephew.
Friends may call from noon until 6 p.m. Sunday, January 20th, at Lunning Chapel where the family will receive friends from 4 until 6 p.m.
Charlie's funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday, January 21st, at First Christian Church where he was a member and also a trustee and deacon. Officiating will be Pastors Dean Benton and Dave Yonker. The Burlington Area Veterans Honor Guard will conduct Military Rites. Interment will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery.
A memorial has been established for First Christian Church.
