John Francis O’Neill II, 83, of Burlington, Iowa, died in Ft. Myers, Florida, on Tuesday, February 25, 2014.
Born on March 31, 1930 in Armstrong, Iowa, he was the son of John F. and Ruth Coady O’Neill. He married Ann Cecile Murray on July 6, 1957 in Iowa City, Iowa.
John was a 1948 graduate of Armstrong High School, Armstrong, Iowa, a 1952 graduate of the University of Notre Dame with a B.S. in Economics and received a Doctorate of Law from the University of Iowa Law School in 1958. John served as Judge Advocate General legal officer in the U.S. Marine Corps and was stationed in Quantico, Virginia, Camp Pendleton, California and El Toro, California. He also served in the U.S. Marine Corps Reserves.
He was a trust officer with Northwest Bank in Mason City, Iowa and served as Trust Officer, Vice President, President and Chairman of the Board at First National Bank and Firstar Bank in Burlington. He was a founding member of the Banks of Iowa Board, was Director of Armstrong Rim and Wheel Company, Armstrong, Iowa. He served on the University of Iowa Law School Foundation Board, Crystal Lake Board of Directors, Girl Scouts Board of Directors, Burlington YMCA Board of Directors and Burlington Golf Club Board of Directors where he was a member as well as Past President. He was also a member of the Rotary Club and SS. John & Paul Catholic Church.
He loved golf and was a fan of the Fighting Irish and Iowa Hawkeyes. His hobbies included family, baseball, basketball, handball, racquetball, hunting and going to the gym. As a collegian he was a pitcher with the Notre Dame Baseball Team and tried out for the New York Yankees.
He is survived by his wife, Ann; two daughters, Sue (Joe) Schilling and Katie (Dan) Moehn, both of Burlington, Iowa; one son, John III (Sarah) O’Neill of Burlington, Iowa six grandchildren, Emily Schilling, Liz (Nick) Anderson, Erin Schilling, Kevin Moehn, Cody Moehn, and John “Jack” O’Neill IV; two brothers, Jim (Ann) O’Neill of St. Louis, Missouri and Gene (Lenore) O’Neill of Spirit Lake, Iowa.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Ruth; and one brother, Jerry.
A Funeral Mass will be held for John F. O’Neill II at St. Paul Catholic Church, Burlington, Iowa March 31st at 1:00 p.m. Fr .Marty Goetz and Fr. David Steinle will be Co-Celebrants. Special music will be provided by the Des Moines Co. Resurrection Choir. Military Rites by Burlington Area Veterans Honor Guard. Interment of ashes will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery. A memorial has been established in his name. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at St. Paul Catholic Church.
