Vernon Floyd Oetken, 91, of New London died Wednesday, June 28, 2006, at Great River Medical Center in West Burlington. Born Aug. 2, 1914, in Burlington, He was the son of Vharles and Allena Wertz Oetken. On Oct. 8, 1938, he married Mary Morris in Kahoka, Mo. Mr. Oetken owned and operated Oetken Inc., selling dairy equipment, fertilizer and chemicals. He was a member of New London Presbyterian Church and recently started attending Burlington Baptist Church. He was a graduate of Burlington High School and took several classes at the University of Illinois. He enjoyed fishing, golfing, square dancing, bowling and crossword puzzles. He was a recognized wood carber after suffering a stroke. Survivors include his wife; one daughter, Maribeth Moravec of New London; eight grandchildren, one great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; two sisters, Leora Brown of New London and Lorraine Tracy of Whittier, Calif.; nieces; and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, one daughter and one son. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday at Elliott Chapel in New London, with family meeting friends from 1 to 2 p.m. The funeral for Mr. Oetken will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Elliopp chapel, with the Rev. Kendall Adams officiating. Burial will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery. A memorial has been established for Great River Hospice.
