Obituary
George A. Beck, 72, retired banker and industrialist, died of cardiac arrest in Burlington Memorial hospital Thursday noon, Jan. 15.
Mr. Beck was named a director of Ft. Madison Bank and Trust Co. in 1946 and a vice president of the bank in 1951. He retired from both positions last Dec. 31.
He joined WA Sheaffer Pen Co., Ft. Madison, as a bookkeeper in 1919 and rose to vice president of the board and chairman of the company’s finance committee.
He was elected a trustee of Iowa Wesleyan College, Mt. Pleasant in 1962.
A resident of Burlington since 1951, he lived at 118 Concord. Dr.
Mr. Beck was a former president of the Ft. Madison school board and Ft. Madison Chamber of Commerce and was a former Ft. Madison city council member.
Mr. Beck was the son of SJ and Bertha Brandenberg Beck and was born March 15, 1897, at Burlington. He was married at Monmouth, Ill., to Delia A. Higham on June 1, 1920.
He was a member of Claypoole Masonic lodge of Ft. Madison, the Elks club,m and the Kaaba temple of Davenport.
He served on various boards and commissions in Ft. Madison and was a member of the United Methodist Church.
Surviving: the wife; daughter Mrs. Bonnie Reid of Des Moines, and three grandsons.
Services; Monday at 10:30 am at Prugh’s Chapel, Dr. G. Dempster Yinger and the Rev. James H. Buikema, Aspen Grove Cemetery.
