Obituary
Fred Charles Nichols, 80, of Burlington, died at 6 p.m. Friday, July 24, 2009, at his residence. Born November 18, 1928, in Spalding, he was the son of James, Sr. and Elsie Johnson Nichols. On June 28, 1947, he married Peggy Lawler in Burlington. Mr. Nichols worked as a core maker and molder for Murray Iron Works and SS Gray Iron Works for 32 years. He also worked for Kmart for 27 years. Mr. Nichols attended Burlington Schools. He was a Navy veteran with the rank of Seaman. He enjoyed baseball and football. He was especially a fan of the St. Louis Cardinals, Denver Broncos, and San Francisco 49ers. Survivors include his wife; one daughter, Teresa Brockway of Scottsdale, AZ; three sons, Kevin Nichols of Ventura, CA, and Steven Nichols and Jeffrey Nichols, both of Burlington; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; two sisters, Joanne Day of Galesburg, IL, and Joyce Malcom of Keithsburg, IL; four brothers, Jack Nichols, Darwin Nichols, and Kenneth Nichols, all of Burlington, and Larry Nichols of Rialto, CA; nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters and two brothers. Visitation will be at 8 a.m. Tuesday at Lunning Chapel, where family will receive friends from 5 until 7 p.m. The funeral service for Mr. Nichols will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Lunning Chapel. Burial with military rites will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery. Memorials have been established.
