M. Phyllis Magnuson Nelson, 89, formerly of Burlington, died Tuesday, March 25, 2008, at Pleasant Manor Care Center in Mount Pleasant. Born August 7, 1918, she was the daughter of Varner C. and Eleanor E. Nelson Magnuson. On April 5, 1942, she married LeRoy L. Nelson. He died June 15, 1973. Mrs. Nelson worked as a secretary at Des Moines County Visiting Nurses, retiring in 1983. She was a graduate of Burlington High School class of 1937 and Burlington Business School. She was a member of Messiah Lutheran Church and King's Daughters. She enjoyed crafts, sewing and quilting. Survivors include two daughters, Margaret Mattix of Oskaloosa and Kathy Young of Mount Pleasant; one son, Jim Nelson of Cheyenne, Wyo.; nine grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by one daughter and her parents. Visitation will be from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday at Lunning Chapel in Burlington, where the family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m. The funeral for Mrs. Nelson will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Lunning Chapel, with the Rev. Rodney Underwood officiating. Burial will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery. A memorial has been established for Messiah Lutheran Church.
