Daniel "Rags" Martin Nelson, 78, of Burlington, died at 1:05 PM Saturday, December 29, 2012, at his home. Born March 16, 1934, in South Dakota, he was the son of Rev. J. E. and Estel Nelson. On December 23, 1955, he married Sherry Lee Meyer in Burlington. Dan worked for Means Clean Towel Service for 30 years and then for the City of Burlington for 21 years. He was of the Lutheran faith. He enjoyed duck, deer, and turkey hunting. He loved polka music and attending polka fests. He spent countless hours with his second family at Jerry's Main Lunch. He was an avid Chicago Bears and Iowa Hawkeyes fan. He also loved mushroom hunting, spending time at his cabin, and fishing on the river. Survivors include his wife, Sherry; two sons, Jay (Becky) Nelson, and Bryan (Becky) Nelson, both of Burlington; one daughter, Kim (Darren) Grimshaw of Burlington; three grandchildren, Tyler Nelson, Breann Nelson, and Blake (Ashley) Nelson; one great-grandchild on the way; one step-brother, Ed Nelson of Volga, SD; one step-sister, Martha Swenson of Dallas, TX three sisters, Jean, Janet, and Joyce, all of California; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents. Cremation has been entrusted to Thielen Crematory. Visitation will be from 8:00 AM until 8:00 PM with the family to receive friends from 5:00 PM until 8:00 PM Wednesday, January 2, 2013, at Thielen Funeral Home. Burial will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery at a later date. A memorial has been established.
