Obituary

Jay Nelson, 54, of Burlington, died at 12:29 PM Wednesday, March 12, 2014, at his home.

Born September 4, 1959, in Burlington, he was the son of Daniel Martin and Sherry Lee Meyer Nelson. On November 1, 2008, he married Becky Sue Brenneman Mullinax in McGregor, Iowa.

He was a custodian for the Burlington School Systems for over 20 years, most recently working at Grimes Elementary School.

He was a 1979 graduate of Burlington High School.

He was a member of AFSCME Local 3490. He was an Iowa Hawkeye football fan. He enjoyed his neighborhood garage parties and driveway bonfires, driving up north to look at the river, hunting, and family vacations to the cabins at McGregor, IA.

Survivors include his wife, Becky, his mother, Sherry Lee Nelson of Burlington; one son, Tyler Nelson of Burlington; three step-sons, Adam (Melissa) Mullinax, Peter (Abby) Mullinax, and Jacob (Rebecca) Mullinax, all of Des Moines; one step-daughter, Hannah (Chris) Mullinax of Davenport, IA; two grandchildren, Mia and Isaiah Tatum; one brother, Bryan (Becky) Nelson of Burlington; one sister, Kim (Darren) Grimshaw of Burlington; one nephew, Blake (Ashley) Nelson; four nieces, Breann Nelson, Amy Blakeman, Julie White, and Katie Brown; three great-nieces, Caleigh Nelson, Emily Smith, and Natalyn Blakeman; two great nephews, Brayden and Logan White; and brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Darrell and Linda Nielsen;

He was preceded in death by his father.

Cremation has been entrusted to the care of Thielen Crematory.

Visitation will be from 9:00 AM until 6:00 PM with the family to receive friends from 3:00 PM until 6:00 PM Sunday, March 16, 2014, at Thielen Funeral Home.

Burial will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery at a later date.
