Arthur "Jake" Edward Nelson, 86, of Oskaloosa and formerly of Burlington and Fort Madison, died Saturday, June 21, 2008, at Chrystal Heights Care in Mahaska County. Born August 14, 1921, in New Boston, he was the son of Arthur Abraham and Katherine Folsom Nelson. He married Loretta Nolte in Fort Madison. She died. He married Irlene L. Hahn in Keokuk. She died. Mr. Nelson was owner and operator of Nelson Phillips 66 station in Fort Madison. He was a bus mechanic for Burlington Transit Lines in Burlington for 27 years. He was of the Protestant faith. He collected Indian artifacts due to his Apache heritage. He enjoyed fishing, camping, western movies, Citizens Band radios, woodworking, hunting, raising coon dogs and playing cards. Survivors include two sons, Allen Nelson of Oskaloosa and Dale Nelson of Albia; four daughters, Carol Vradenburg, Barbara Cross, Donna Bernhardt and Alberta Anderson, all of Fort Madison; 10 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren. Besides his two wives, he was preceded in death by two children, one great-great-grandchild, three brothers and one sister. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Prugh's Chapel in Burlington, where the family will receive friends. The funeral for Mr. Nelson will be at 2:30 p.m. Friday at Prugh's Chapel, with the Rev. Carl Engstrom officiating. Burial will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery in Burlington. A memorial has been established.
